Open position: Research Assistant
U Oregon Science Complex
Position Description
The Institute of Neuroscience at the University of Oregon is seeking a Research Assistant to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments.
The Sylwestrak Lab seeks a skilled and motivated Research Assistant to work 100% time. The Research Assistant will work under general guidance from the Primary Investigator and senior lab members to study neural circuitry of motivated behavior. Projects include using molecular and electrophysiological techniques to define neuronal cell types in neural circuits underlying reward-guided behavior, imaging of cell-type specific neuronal activity during reward-guided behavior, and anatomical mapping of connectivity of brain-wide reward networks. The position includes performing a variety of in vitro and in vivo experiments, utilizing a variety of surgical, molecular biological, behavioral, and histological techniques. The Research Assistant may assist in supervising and training new staff and students on techniques as necessary, as well as performing lab management duties such as ordering supplies, maintaining lab records, and adhering to all University of Oregon safety regulations. The Research Assistant will interpret results and make suggestions that may lead to publication. On the job training in specific techniques will be provided.
Performance of technical procedures, interpretation of results, recognition of irregularities, recommendations for modification of techniques and approaches will be expected. The Research Assistant must be self-motivated, a quick learner, technically adept, accurate, efficient, organized and keep detailed records. The ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential. The Research assistant must also have good general basic computer skills (including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and a knowledge of, or willingness to learn, basic coding of behavioral paradigms in MATLAB or Python. In addition, the Research Assistant must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Duties include:
· Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory. Perform basic analyses of results.
· Help with general lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
· Handling animals, running behavioral assays (including in vivo optical monitoring of neuronal activity), and analyzing data.
· Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate students.
· Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
· Maintain animal colony, including ordering, breeding, and genotyping.
· Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
· Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.
· Help orient and train new staff or students.
